Poems and Thoughts    by Frank Maurer

Why Do We Sneeze?

I sneeze when I get chilled or when temperatures change slightly.
In California I wear only shorts or a kilt all year,
So I might be a little more vulnerable than others!
I have also, in my 'good old days,' sneezed after intercourse.
So let's see what the intellectuals have to say.
Sneezing is also named sternutation, an involuntary reflex,
Which protects the respiratory system.
By forcefully clearing irritants from the nasal passages.
Specialized lining nerve cells in the nose detect dust, smoke, etc.
These cells send a signal to the brainstem (medulla oblongata).
The sneeze reboots the nose, clearing everything to refunction.
Sneezes are triggered by allergies, infections, or physical stimuli.
They are caused by environmental stimulants like cold air or perfumes.
Bright light or sunlight can sometimes be a cause.
Satiation or eating a very large meal can be a stimulant.
'Crossed wires' in the autonomic nervous system can trigger a sneeze
From an orgasm, or even sexual thoughts, but only rarely.
Multiple sneezes can occur until the irritant is cleared.
Never hold in a sneeze (the pressure can travel up to 100 mph),
As it could cause a ruptured eardrum, damaged blood vessels,
Or perhaps a collapsed lung.
Well, more than you wished to know, but as with everything--
Not always so simple!
